I am in Sapa right now for two days and have returned after last being here 17 years ago. Last time took the overnight train then the crazy drive in a shuttle bus on a scary single lane road. This time got driven in from Hai Gaing and straight away noticed the multi lane road and realised i was in for some changes. My god drove straight into a massive traffic grid lock that was the whole town. Thousands of people everywhere. I was absolutely shocked. Found the main square which has been sunken and the church to get my bearings and tried to remember what it was like. So many high rise buildings now. I remember all those years ago looking out of our hotel bedroom window first thing in the morning looking down onto the top of the clouds in the valley and then the clouds would rise up as the morning progressed and cloud the town. Peaceful and quiet. This is progress i suppose but is it for the better?
