Vũng Tàu is a city in southern Vietnam. Its population is 278,188. The city area is 140 km2 (54 sq mi) including 13 urban wards and one village. It is the capital of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, and is the crude oil extraction center of Vietnam. It is also known as one of the most beautiful cities of tourism in Vietnam. Located near Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong province, Vũng Tàu in association with these two places forms a triangle of economic power.During the Vietnam War, Vũng Tàu was home to the Australian Army and American support units, and was a popular spot for in-country R&R for U.S. combat troops. I spent 12 months in Vung Tau in 1964-65. I was totally immerse in the city because of the lack of US military facilities. I remember Back Beach, Front Beach and what was called French Beach. I do not remember a fourth beach. I remember a major Catholic Church in the Center of the city. I hope to return next Summer.

I went back in 1996 before Clinton retsarted diplomatic relations. VT was a quaint and charming resort town with coconut trees, bars and restaurants on the beach, we stayed in an ocean front hotel and I spent most of the night awake, on the balcony to watch the sunset, sunrise & inhale the fragrant breeze. In 2011, we went back to a sprawling city, the beach was almost gone, replaced by a huge park. I was still glad I visited VT but you might want to check out NhaTrang n China Beach. Cheers!

The capital of Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu province is now Bà Rịa.

Thanks for the memories. I was there in '66 at the airbase, with 765th TransBn. I saw the little bars we used to drink at on Back Beach.
