The Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam is a vast maze of rivers, swamps and islands, home to floating markets, Khmer pagodas and villages surrounded by rice paddies. Boats are the main means of transportation, and tours of the region often start in nearby Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) or Can Tho, a bustling town in the heart of the delta.Can Tho features the ornate Ong Chinese temple, while the town of Tra Vinh is known for its Khmer pagodas. Throughout the Delta, farmers and fishermen sell local produce from flat-bottomed sampan boats in colorful floating markets such as Cái Răng, Cái Bè and Phong Điền. The Mekong is also a biological haven for rare species like the Mekong giant catfish and Sarus crane, found at Tràm Chim National Park.
